TurboTax, Intuit’s popular iPad app for e-filing taxes, is now in its second year. The newest edition of TurboTax is even more optimized for use on the Apple tablet and guarantees users the highest refunds possible for the tax year 2012. The app allows users to do their taxes while they’re on the go and even while they’re offline. An internet connection is however required to finally e-file the returns. Anyone can try the app for free and pay only if they e-file the tax return.
As you start preparing your tax returns on the app, TurboTax by default selects the ‘Deluxe’ version that costs $29.99. As you work through the return, TurboTax will automatically prompt you in case you need to upgrade to another version (Premier or Home & Business) according to your personal situation. The user-friendly app asks you questions and carries out calculations based on your answers much like an actual tax preparer. The actual form can be viewed only at the end after you’ve filled out all the relevant boxes.
Although TurboTax for iPad does not support all personal tax situations, it does support most of the common ones as well as many little known ones. Once you have selected all the situations that apply to you TurboTax goes on to evaluate your form and scrutinize it for inaccuracies. The app lets you know if you’ve missed any deductions or made any mistakes. You can now correct your slip-ups right where they’re found without having to go to another screen.
Most of the process of preparing and filing taxes on TurboTax for iPad is the same as Intuit’s TurboTax Online which can be accessed from any web browser. The user interface on the app is the same as that on the online applications barring the ‘Live Community’ extracts at the bottom of the page and the ‘Tools’ button that houses the list of topics and fee related information for quick access on the online version.
However the ‘Live Community’ and ‘Help Center’ can be accessed from the iPad app from the small question mark icon situated on the upper right side. Navigation is greatly simplified in the app with simple ‘Back’, ‘Continue’, ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ buttons at the bottom of the screen. Alternately, the vertical panel on the left side of the screen contains all the buttons for the various sections in the app allowing for smooth navigation within the app. The panel also houses the ‘Topic Search’ box.
Tablet users will find TurboTax for iPad much more convenient since the entire process can be accomplished from start to finish within the tablet app on Intuit’s familiar and uncomplicated user interface. The app however does not allow users to work on the same return on different devices. Contrastingly, H&R Block, TurboTax’s main rival, allows users to switch devices while working on a tax return. All things considered, TurboTax for iPad is the perfect tool to have on your Apple tablet for a seamless tax e-filing experience.
